The IFAI ShowStoppers Award recognizes products that are revolutionary in design and application among other criteria. “It is an honour to be recognized by the IFAI for our innovative services,” commented Ben Mead of Hohenstein Institute America.

“By providing accurate and cost-effective testing methods like WATson, we can help IFAI members develop safer, better functioning fabrics and products that will perform as expected in real world applications.”

WATson

Hohenstein’s WATson heat loss measurement device simulates the body’s interaction with fabrics under a spectrum of controlled ambient conditions such as in wind, in humidity, and in tropical or arctic climates.

WATson models the body’s heat loss to evaluate the various thermal properties of fabrics. The device measures minute skin temperature changes to quickly and accurately quantify a textile’s cooling and insulating properties.

The WATson technology provides data that is especially helpful in optimizing design for outerwear, outdoor gear, and protective apparel where the environmental conditions can play a critical role in the fabric’s overall performance, the Institute reports.

Applications

WATson offers a range of possibilities for the development and optimisation of diverse textile fabrics and apparel, from T-shirts with a cooling effect to windproof motor bike jackets, plus technical textiles and outdoor articles such as cold-resistant sleeping bags, according to the Institute.

For designers and product development engineers, this means that textiles can be tested during the development phase and optimised at an early stage. WATson can also be used to monitor quality and performance during production, acting as an important support tool in ensuring quality standards.
