SILVADUR Antimicrobial recognised by R&D Magazine

SILVADUR Antimicrobial has been named by R&D Magazine as one of the 100 most technologically significant products introduced during the past year. SILVADUR Antimicrobial was introduced by Dow Microbial Control, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, in September last year. According to the manufacturer, it is gaining rapid acceptance in the marketplace because it offers reliable odour control and long-lasting freshness in apparel and textiles at a time when more and more consumers are embracing a healthier, more hygienic lifestyle. The R&D 100 Awards annually recognise technological innovation in a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, optics, high-energy physics, materials science, chemistry and biotechnology.

Technological significance

SILVADUR Antimicrobial’s technological significance was determined by an independent panel of judges and R&D Magazine editors based on the product’s attributes. It is the only silver-based antimicrobial technology that employs an organic polymer system to deliver low concentrations of silver ions to fabric surfaces, thereby effectively controlling the growth of microorganisms.

The panel also recognised the technology for its patented ‘smart’ system intelligently that controls odour-causing bacteria by accurately releasing a prescribed amount of silver ions on the surface of fabric treated with SILVADUR when they are needed. Its unique liquid and organic form of silver is said to enable it to be safely and effectively applied in markets where antimicrobials could not previously be used.

The technology is compatible with both natural and synthetic fibres, as well as a broad range of common textile additives, detergents and other finishing treatments. It is also able to provide antimicrobial protection to apparel and textiles for 50 or more washings. Its liquid formulation, which can be easily applied and processed using multiple methods, is different to most other products available on the market today.

Recognition

“Our goal was to apply Dow Microbial Control’s technology leadership in developing a credible, effective and easy-to-use microbial control product that would enable apparel brand owners and textile suppliers to offer consumers long-lasting freshness in their products,” said Karel Williams, global strategic marketing manager for Dow Microbial Control.  “This recognition from a prestigious publication like R&D Magazine validates to the marketplace and our team at Dow that we have met our goal.”

Dow Microbial Control is actively seeking manufacturing and distribution partners around the world for SILVADUR Antimicrobial, according to Williams. Product samples are readily available, enabling potential partners to see first-hand how the product can add value to apparel and textiles and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations.
