Belgium based Europlasma, a leader in low pressure plasma technology, will present its growing Nanofics family of innovative nanocoatings for the filtration industry during Filtech 2015 exhibition that takes place from 24-26 February in Cologne.

“Selected customers have started experimenting with these new halogen free coatings with very promising results. Water contact angles of more than 120 degrees can be achieved and they can withstand multiple washes,” commented Eva Rogge, Europlasma’s R&D Manager.

Nanofics refers to nanoscaled functionalization into the core of complex shaped materials and products. It is Europlasma’s patented nanocoating technology platform, first applied on industrial scale in 1996.

Nanofics range

Nanofics 10 coatings have very high affinity for water, resulting in water contact angles of lower than 10 degrees, according to ASTM D5964. The product is able to transform any filtration material - even PTFE - into a material with a permanently hydrophilic surface, the manufacturer reports.

Nanofics 120 coatings, on the other hand, are said to be highly water repellent (water contact angle of 120 degrees according to ASTM D5964) and highly oil repellent (oil repellency level 8 according to ISO 14419) fluoropolymer type of nanocoatings deposited by low pressure plasma technology.

Nanofics 110 coatings are also highly water repellent (water contact angle of 110 degrees according to ASTM D5964) and highly oil repellent (oil repellency level 6 according to ISO 14419) fluoropolymer type of nanocoatings. The unique aspect of these coatings is that they are completely free from PFOA and PFOS, according to the company.

Innovative and sustainable

Now Europlasma is leading the way to more environmentally friendly solutions with the development of a new family of water repellent nanocoatings which are completely free from halogens, the company reports.

The company just received funding from IWT, the Flemish government agency for Innovation by Science and Technology, to boost this development.

“Europlasma was in 1996 the first company to bring nanocoating technology to the filtration market. In almost 20 years Europlasma has supplied low pressure plasma technology to more than 30 filtration companies worldwide. We work with each filtration company individually to find the best solution for their material, or to build a unique product for their customers,” said Peter Martens, Europlasma’s Sales Manager.
