New prepreg systems for rolling stock applications

Cytec Industrial Materials is adding two new products to its rail portfolio that meet the fire requirements of EN45545-2:2013. The MTM 348FR is a versatile curing epoxy resin prepreg matrix offering fire protection to category HL2. In combination with either glass or carbon fibres, it is said to offer excellent mechanical performance, making it ideal for the manufacture of lightweight composite components for both interior and exterior structural and non-structural applications.

The XMTM30 is a development product, produced from a bio-renewable sustainable source and meets the requirements of category HL3. It is particularly suitable for the production of non-structural interior components and can be used in combination with natural fibres to create a truly bio-sustainable system, the company reports.

Weight and cost saving

New products will be showcased at the Railway Interiors Show in Cologne, that will take place from 12-14 November. A technical paper, demonstrating the benefits of these products, will also be delivered at the event.

“We are very excited about the development of these two new products, as they complement our existing phenolic and epoxy rail focussed prepregs. The key advantage of prepreg technology is that it enables the manufacture of lightweight complex monolithic sections and sandwich structures thereby offering weight saving and a reduction in running costs to the train operator,” said Dr Richard Horn, Rail Market Manager.

Typical railway interior applications include wall panels, window frames, partitions, archways, floors, ceilings, standbacks, luggage racks, seats and doors.

Cytec’s Industrial Materials

Cytec’s Industrial Materials segment provides advanced composite and process materials for aerospace, automotive, wind energy, motorsport, marine, mass transportation and other demanding applications.

The company’s product portfolio supports the end-to-end manufacturing of composite parts and includes tooling, fibre, prepregs, resin systems, vacuum bagging, and adhesive, resin and surfacing films.
