Invista’s Cordura brand has teamed up with an innovative designer Douglas Davidson from The Brown Buffalo for a bag and pack collaboration that debuted at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2016 last week.

The Cordura + The Brown Buffalo collaboration integrates the brands new Cordura TPX laminate fabric into modern everyday classics; a tote bag, backpack and messenger bag designed to take the outdoor enthusiast from the city street to a mountaintop.

Cordura TPX fabric is a specialized laminate technology produced by innovative Cordura brand authorized manufacturer, Chia Her, Taiwan.

Cordura TPX fabric

According to the manufacturer, Cordura TPX fabric is ideal for products in the outdoor and military/tactical markets that need added durability in a lightweight construction. This waterproof laminate fabric technology is designed to provide enhanced tear strength and abrasion resistance, so it is also well suited for travel gear like bags, totes, luggage and duffle bags.

Davidson began the collection with the tote bag and expanded to include a trekking backpack and messenger bag. "The new Cordura TPX fabric is exciting to work with – I've been looking for something like it for a while," said Davidson. "This lightweight fabric can be coated with scrim and laminated without adding excess weight. Experimenting with this finer weave and its durable construction inspired the collection."

The fabric is available from Cordura brand authorized mill Chang Ho in 99 g/m2 to 260 g/m2 weights with black/orange, navy, grey and custom colour options.

The Collection

The Cordura + The Brown Buffalo collaboration tote bag comes ready-to-go as a carryall bag with a simple but functional design featuring pockets for a phone as large as the iPhone 6 plus, and other miscellaneous items, such as towels, sunscreen and shoes. Cordura TPX laminate fabric is used on the bottom of the bag for enhanced water resistance. It is available as an open tote or with a zippered closure.

Featuring a clean design like the tote bag, both the trekking backpack and messenger bag are geared toward everyday use, the company reports. The trekking backpack is ideal for a day trip to the lake or beach, featuring a pocket designed to hold essential documents like a driver’s license or itinerary.

The messenger bag is made for the daily traveller to take anywhere. It is said to be durable enough for an outdoor excursion but also offering a laptop sleeve to meet a modern professional’s on-the-go needs.

Design

"For Cordura brand, collaboration and knowledge sharing is key," said Cindy McNaull, global Cordura brand and marketing director. "We believe that working with other industry professionals helps us not only gain valuable insight as to how our current fabrics are being used, but it expands our perception of what designers are looking for in the future."

According to Cordura, Davidson provided useful feedback on the benefits of incorporating durable fabrics in his designs, while working on the bag and pack designs. "The more I use fabrics such as Cordura 500d and Cordura TPX, the more I continue to like the texture and the shelf appeal that goes along with it. They're premium fabrics - which is a hallmark of my studio," said Davidson.

"All of the companies I develop products for are premium brands, and that is where my design interest lies – so I felt that working with Cordura brand and its new TPX fabric was a natural marriage. I wanted to show people the variety of end-uses for the fabric and encourage them to push the boundaries and see what they can do themselves."
