Lineo, a producer of a full range of fabrics, prepregs or braids made with flax fibres, has created the brand name FlaxTape for its range of unidirectional flax-fibre tapes.

FlaxTape

Four years in development, FlaxTape is a range of unidirectional flax-fibre tapes for composite applications. It is 100% flax, dry reinforcement tape for use with all types of thermosetting resins and thermoplastics.

FlaxTape is ready-for-use in all conventional processes to produce composites by means of infusion, RTM, film stacking, compression moulding, prepreg and more.

Lighter and cost-effective

The FlaxTape range has been developed to enhance vibration absorption qualities, mechanical properties, weight reduction and aesthetic aspects of composite components and is available in a range of weights: 70, 110 and 200g / m².

According to the company, its advantages over conventional composite materials, include:

  • lighter than carbon and glass
  • of aligned fibres giving the best mechanical properties
  • a flat product requiring less resin than conventional products
  • price competitive

FlaxTape is also said to have excellent mechanical properties with a flexural rigidity higher than 30GPa, plus a vibration damping coefficient twice that of aramid or glass, the company reports.

Applications

According to Lineo, its FlaxTape is an entirely renewable and natural product presenting risk-free handling in use.

FlaxTape is being used today in various sectors, including transport, for its weight reduction, mechanical and acoustic properties replicating those of aramid. It can also be used in energy sector, in the development of wind turbines, and in sport and leisure – for its vibration absorption properties.
