According to leading German flat knitting machine manufacturer Stoll, challenges in the knitting industry are always accumulating. As well as economic factors such as productivity and efficiency, innovative capability plays an increasingly larger role. Nowhere is this more so than in the area of technical textiles.

Speaking at last month’s ITMA ASIA + CITME exhibition in Shanghai, Stoll’s technical textiles commercial specialist Martin Legner discussed the company’s approach to technical textiles and showed a wide range of knitted fabrics and objects, including footwear, for multiple applications for his company’s advanced flat knitting technology.

“With its Technical Textiles, Stoll is one of the few companies worldwide to offer networked flat knitting machine technology expertise in combination with the latest achievements in technical textiles,” Legner stated.

Environmental approach

Where before the focus was purely on fashion for Stoll, today it is particularly functionality and sustainability that play a large role. Especially challenging, the company says, are the tasks whereby customers and partners then also require shape and aesthetics.

Aspects of production such as waste avoidance and environmental protection are also ever more important, and in this respect Stoll has been an active member of the Blue Competence sustainability initiative of the German engineering association VDMA (Verband der Maschinen- und Anlagenbauer) since 2013. Stoll´s Technical Textiles paves the way for more sustainability with its development and research assignments, the company added.

Complex shaped pieces

One of the major advantages flat knitting technology has over other textile technologies is the capability to knit individual and complex shaped pieces.

“Stoll flat knitting machines offer a huge amount of application and productivity potential here,” Martin Legner says. “In practice, complex shaped pieces can be quickly and flexibly produced in a way that saves material and produces either no or minimal waste and scrap.”

“Short equipping times, even with small piece numbers, ensure greater efficiency, and that ultimately means better and more economical manufacturing,” Legner added.

Targeted sectors

Stoll sees itself as a point of contact for customers from the following sectors:

  • Medical technology
  • Sport
  • Upholstery
  • Industry technology
  • Entertainment and lifestyle industry
