Aerotherm has released a new range of products developed using aerogel insulation, designed for the outdoor industry. In partnership with Aspen Aerogel, an energy efficiency company, Aerotherm specialises in the processing of Aerogel material, making it suitable for thermal applications to be used in consumer goods, such as outdoor apparel, footwear and equipment.

The latest range includes Aerotherm aerogel insulated Soft Thermal Cooler, Thermal Bottle Cooler and a foldable Seat-Pad.

Soft Thermal Cooler

Powered by Aerotherm aerogel insulation, the new Soft Thermal Cooler is said to be perfect to use outdoors, on the occasion of a picnic, campsite, biking, or any other outdoor activity.

It is designed using Aerogel (NASA developed for space) advanced thermal insulation and is said to provide maximum thermal protection, both hot and cold. It is proven to insure up to two times longer duration thermal performance compared with products not using Aerotherm aerogel, the company reports.

Thermal Bottle Cooler

Also developed with Aerotherm aerogel insulation, the bottle is designed to be used when biking, hiking, climbing, walking or camping, ensuring the beverage remains cold or hot and in its liquid state.

According to the company, the product’s quality construction ensures the softness and durability, providing maximum thermal protection, whilst using little storage space when folded.

It weighs less than a thermos, and has a zipper seam for easy insertion and removal. Tests have shown that the liquid placed in the bottle remains cold for more than three hours in a hot environment with temperatures reaching up to 40C degrees.

Foldable Seat-Pad

According to the company, this is the perfect thermal insulating seating pad for all of the outdoor sporting events, including hunting, fishing, camping and more.

Due to the advanced thermal barrier protection achieved by blocking out the cold under seat, the company reports, the thermal insulating performance of Aerotherm foldable seat pads are never compromised or effected by compression.

Aerogel

Flexible aerogels were originally developed to serve as a protective barrier to the extreme temperatures that occur during rocket launches and that affect spacecraft as they are exposed to both high heat and severe cold.

NASA contracted Aspen Aerogel to continue its development of the product to produce three variations – Cryogel, Pyrogel an Spaceloft, which are now used in outdoor apparel and textiles, industrial, construction, refrigeration, automotive, medical and commercial applications.

Aerotherm aerogel insulation

Composed of over 90% air, aerogel is said to be a highly effective insulator with the lowest thermal conductivity of any solid. Aerotherm uses silica aerogel in producing a strong, durable, and flexible material that is two to eight times more effective than traditional thermal insulation, the company reports.

It is said to be thin, compression-resistant and waterproof, suitable for outdoor products, individual protective clothes and footwear insulation. According to the company, other advantages of products designed with aerogel insulation, include durability in normal wash/dry cycle, high thermal performance, and a minimum thickness allowing thinner design.
