Lenzing says it has launched an innovative project in the technical nonwovens sector by opening a newly constructed pilot plant to develop fibre products for high-tech electrical applications at its Heilgenkreuz plant.

As a market leader, Lenzing works continuously on the further development and improvement of the properties of its fibres and in its nonwovens business the focus is on promising applications in the technical sector in addition to the main use of the fibres for wipes.

“At the end of October we successfully presented initial research results in connection with our pilot plant located at the Heilgenkreuz facility in Burgenland, Austria”, says Gisela Goldhalm, Project Manager New Products Business Unit Nonwoven Fibers.

“The pilot facility aims to bring promising laboratory results to a new level, and optimize new fibre solutions, especially for technical applications in the field of energy storage.”

In advanced electrical devices, Lenzing aims to enhance capacity and service life. Efficient energy storage and delivery devices employ separator papers designed to allow efficient ionic transportation but prevent short circuiting and breakdown. Such devices will find applications in everyday life from mobile phones and digital cameras to alternative fuel vehicles and in the drive for increasing efficiency Tencel is one of the fibres of choice for its performance.

“Lenzing is proud to announce a further innovative fibre development. The technical segment is particularly important to us as a means of compensating for cyclical fluctuations in other businesses such as hygiene. Our innovation focus is on future-oriented technologies, and we are continually striving to expand our product portfolio in this direction,” adds Wolfgang Plasser, Vice President and General Manager Business Unit Nonwoven Fibers.

The Lenzing Group is a world market leader with headquarters in Austria, production sites in all major markets as well as a worldwide network of sales and marketing offices. Lenzing supplies the global textile and nonwovens industry with high-quality man-made cellulose fibres and is the leading supplier in many business-to-business markets. The portfolio ranges from dissolving pulp, standard and specialty cellulose fibres to high-quality plastic polymer products and engineering services.
