The independent testing and certification system Oeko-Tex presented its Sustainability Award to the leading fibre manufacturer Lenzing in the category ‘Product Innovation’, soon after the company celebrated its anniversary under a logo ‘75 Years of Innovation’.

Achievements

Looking for the innovations that are suitable for the market, are economically sustainable and may contribute to the environment, the jury voted for Lenzing, a leading world market supplier to the global textile and non-woven industry that produces man-made cellulose fibres from the renewable raw material wood.

In the field of environmental technology, the company manages to convey its philosophy with a focus on sustainability with its latest achievement, an ‘Edelweiss’ technology, the application of an oxygen-based process that makes the modal fibres produced with this technology even more environmentally friendly and CO2 neutral.

Nonwoven Fibres

Andreas Dorner, responsible for textile marketing at Lenzing, and Wolfgang Plasser, General Manager & Vice President Nonwoven Fibres, accepted the prize on the company’s behalf. Dorner commented: “This award is particularly valuable, not least because the Oeko-Tex community has a detailed insight into what is happening in the industry, and can accurately assess which companies deserve the awards thanks to long and intensive cooperation with some 10,000 companies.”

“Certifications also play a key role in the nonwovens segment. Quality is of the utmost importance in many of our end applications, especially disposable products with direct skin contact, such as hygienic or baby products, but also in the medical segment", explained Wolfgang Plasser.

“The customers along the nonwovens processing chain demand individual, innovative solutions which can be disposed of after use with a good conscience. The Oeko-Tex Sustainability Award once again underlines the fact that Lenzing in its role as a raw material supplier is the ideal partner from the very beginning.”

Standards

Elisabeth Stanger, Global Marketing Director Nonwoven Fibres, said: “We are pleased to offer to our customers another proof of our commitment to quality. Third party certificates provide an independent view on fibres offered in the market. The increasing amounts of certificates on Tencel clearly differentiate it as a new generation of fibres from other products in the market. It is important to us that our customers and their customers feel confident in using our fibres especially when producing high quality products for sensitive applications.”

Lenzing’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Untersperger explained: “Lenzing manufactures products from the raw material wood in an environmentally responsible manner. Lenzing has set new standards for the entire cellulose fibre industry on the basis of sustainable process improvements and its success in largely closing chemical cycles as well as the use of state-of-the-art wastewater and exhaust air purification processes. I am happy that these achievements have been honoured by Oeko-Tex at precisely the same time as our 75th anniversary.”
