Oerlikon Barmag will be showcasing its spinning and winding solutions for composites yarns at the forthcoming JEC show. The company will also be demonstrating its competence in the area of pumps for composite materials at the Paris show which is being held from 27-29 March.

Fibre composite materials are considered the materials of the future. They promise solutions wherever light, but nevertheless stable, structures are required. The materials are deployed in the automobile construction sector, in the civil aviation industry, in sports, in wind power systems and in architecture.

In contrast to steel, composite materials – in addition to their considerably lower weight – excel in terms of their chemical resistance, higher resistance to pressure and greater tensile strength and their heat resistance. However, the production of the fundamental fibres is extremely complex and challenging.

Fibre composite material components are made up of two different primary constituents: the reinforcing fibre fabric and the embedding matrix. The fabric, which provides the rigidity for the components, can be either carbon fibres or aramid, whereas the matrix, that lends the component the desired shape, is made up by mixing resins with hardeners.

The Oerlikon Barmag portfolio includes the spinning and metering pumps for in-process requirements as well as a range of special yarn winders for the take-up of carbon and textile glass fibres and aramids.

Also exhibiting at the trade fair, are Oerlikon Group’s coating professionals Oerlikon Balzers and vacuum specialists at Oerlikon Leybold.
