Spacetex project prepares for lift-off

On 28 May 2014, the German ESA astronaut Dr Alexander Gerst will take off from the cosmodrome in Baikonur, in Kazakhstan, bound for the International Space Station (ISS). During the six-month Blue Dot mission, Dr Gerst will be responsible for almost 40 different experiments including the Spacetex project, the first clothing physiology experiments to be carried out in a weightless environment.

In this respect, a specialist meeting, supported by the Hessian Ministry for Economics, a state institution of the German State of Hesse with headquarters in the state capital of Wiesbaden, was held on 13 February at Karl Mayer Textilmaschinenfabrik in Obertshausen.

Bayer supports development of coated textiles

Bayer MaterialScience, the leading polymer company, has inaugurated its state-of-the-art textile coating pilot line in Shanghai, China. At its headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany, the company has also installed new lab facilities, among them a lab coater. Along with the dedicated lab space in Pittsburgh, USA, these new investments are expected to allow Bayer to further strengthen its capabilities in the coated textile sector.

BMSvision monitoring systems at ITMA Asia 2014

BMSvision will exhibit the latest version of its Manufacturung Execution Systems (MES) for weaving, knitting, tufting and spinning, at ITMA Asia 2014 that will be taking place in Shanghai from16-20 June. All of these systems include software modules for real time machine monitoring, production scheduling, fabric inspection, yarn inventory management and traceability.

Freudenberg spunlaids achieve recycled content certification

SCS Global Services (SCS), a leader in third-party environmental and sustainability certification, has certified the high level recycled content claim of Lutradur products manufactured by the Freudenberg Spunweb Company. Three specific styles of polyester spunlaid products made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and marketed under the Lutradur brand were certified. These have many industrial applications, including construction substrates, landscaping materials, residential and commercial wallpaper, carpet backings, automotive floor mats and carpeting, and specialised filtration devices.

Demand will be spurred primarily by growing awareness among consumers of the importance of personal hygiene and the health risks posed by certain microorganisms.

TenCate Millenia fabrics selected by Dutch fire brigade

The Dutch Zaanstreek-Waterland fire brigade has opted for TenCate high-tech fabrics in their turnout gear. The protective materials from TenCate will be used in 800 new fire-fighting suits that will be supplied in partnership with the LHD Group in Germany. TenCate Millenia fabrics will be used for the lightweight outer shell, the protective thermal liner and reinforcement parts. The first 285 suits are expected to be delivered in July.

The 89th Textile Institute World Conference opens for submissions

The Textile Institute has announced that its next World Conference will take place in at the Lake View Garden Hotel Wuhan, China, from 2-6 November 2014. Jointly organised by The Textile Institute and Wuhan Textile University, the organisers invite submissions of original papers for oral and poster presentations at the 89th Textile Institute Word Conference (TIWC 2014).
