A nonwovens fabric jointly developed by Voith Paper and Truetzschler Nonwovens, has successfully passed the official INDA and EDANA test, becoming certified as ‘flushable’.
Voith and Truetzschler Nonwovens have been successful in producing wet laid and hydroentangled nonwovens with a high level of wet strength, consisting only of fibres of natural origin that quickly disperse in water, and that are 100% biodegradable.
The Saxon Textile Research Institute (STFI) has been awarded with the German Resource Efficiency Award 2013 for the research project ‘CarbonWasteCycle – recycling concept for carbon fibre waste’.
The objective of the project is the re-use of carbon fibre cuttings or waste or bad batches for (extreme) lightweight construction using suitable recycling processes.
“Because sustainability is an important matter from a researcher’s perspective, we are proud to be honoured with this award,” said Andreas Berthel, Managing Director of the STFI.

Ultrasonic technology is increasingly being used as an assembly method for body armour. “One of the reasons behind the growing preference for ultrasonic assembly is the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) wet-conditioning standards that require ballistic vests to be waterproof, even after submersion for 30 minutes,” explained Sonobond Vice President Melissa Alleman.
“More than 30 manufacturers now use Sonobond equipment because it reliably seals the outer nylon shell, protecting the ballistic-resistant material inside from the damaging effects of exposure to moisture.”
According to Seshadri Ramkumar, Associate Professor of Non-Wovens at Texas Tech University the textiles sector can benefit from research and development activities in developing next generation functional textiles as more and more scientists are mimicking nature to develop functional properties such as waterproofing, changes in surface adhesion and biocidal characteristics.
In an article for Commodity online Professor Ramkumar reports that the development of broad spectrum and cost effective biocides is a major challenge for the textile and related industries. He goes on to discuss the work of a team of Australian and Spanish researchers led by Elena Ivanova of the Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, that have developed nano black silicon biocidal surfaces that has shown to have effective biocidal capabilities against Gram-negative and Gram- positive bacteria and endospores.
The team used the comparison of biocidal activities of nano black silicon and dragonfly wings, which show that they have similar antimicrobial characteristics.

Oerlikon Barmag claims to have set a new benchmark for the efficient production of polyester fibres with its new yarn winder WINGS POY 1800.
The new winding unit is said to boost productivity by a further 20 % using virtually the same amount of production space as the previous model. “With WINGS POY 1800, we are once again underscoring our technological leadership in the area of filament spinning. According to CO2 Nexus, the producer of CO2-based textile and garment cleaning solutions, traditional cleanroom laundries and other service centres that launder textiles and garments worn in controlled environments are faced with high capital and operating costs, and create significant sustainability impacts.
The company believes these costs are in large part driven by the water-based infrastructure and processing steps needed to meet cleanroom garment standards.
By replacing water-based methods with liquid carbon dioxide (CO2)-based cleaning methods, operational costs, capital infrastructure, and sustainability impact can all be significantly reduced, according to the company.

The device is said to refresh textiles without washing while the new technology also actively reduces microorganisms.
