FICCI has urged its Ministry of Textiles and BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) to expedite the formulation of standards in technical textiles for health, safety and environment reasons.
Speaking at the second National Seminar on Standards in Technical Textiles, Shishir Jaipuria, Chairman, FICCI Committee on Textiles and Technical Textiles, said that there has been progress in the formulation of standards in the last two to three years, but there is a need to focus more on areas such as health, hygiene and safety, which would encourage the use of technical textiles in the country and also help in exports.
According to the Compendium on Standards in Technical Textiles released at the seminar, the domestic market of technical textiles is expected to reach Rs 1.58 lac crore by 2016-2017 with an estimated annual growth of 20%.
Bavarian nonwovens producer Sandler AG has reported a successful year 2013, during which the company has generated a sales volume of EUR 274 million, manufacturing approximately 100,000 tonnes of nonwovens.
The Sandler team also grew in 2013, with a staff of 600 now working in the company’s headquarters in Schwarzenbach. According to the company, it achieved very good results in all market segments from nonwovens for hygiene applications and wipes substrates for care and cleaning to technical applications in industrial and household uses.
The hygiene, wipes and automotive segments were major contributors to Sandler’s success. Long-term development projects were also successfully implemented and established on the market.
Working together with Continental Structural Plastics (CSP), Cytec Industrial Materials has developed MTM 23, a tailored, self-releasing rapid-cure vinyl ester resin system, to satisfy the criteria for production of a composite electrical vehicle battery enclosure that would meet a number of rigorous performance requirements.
These included 30° offset-barrier, side-impact, and rear-barrier crash; 50 G impulse shock (X, Y, Z); post-crash package integrity; fire-resistance testing; 3-m drop testing (bottom/end); 1-m water-submersion test; and vibration/shock testing.
Cytec and CSP also worked together on data generation, ply design and press production technology. That close collaboration enabled CSP to manufacture parts in less than 10 minutes at a 150° cure, but MTM 23 has the capability to be rapid-cured in less than 3 minutes, the manufacturer reports.

(PGI), the world's largest nonwovens manufacturer, announced today that it will make a strategic investment of approximately $8 million to upgrade machinery and expand its manufacturing plant in Waynesboro, Virginia. The company will also hire up to 20 new employees.
