London-based JDD Furniture has designed the bold new NITA sustainable seating pod, reimagining workplace comfort through the lens of circularity and environmental impact.

The pod is only available upholstered in Seaqual yarn, a premium, sustainable material derived from marine plastic waste, including PET bottles, discarded fishing gear and ocean-bound debris. Via the Seaqual Initiative, the raw materials for the yarn are sourced from coastal cleanup networks involving fishermen, NGOs and local communities around the globe.

“To date, we have transformed over 400 tons of plastic retrieved from the world’s oceans, and thanks to products like JDD Furniture’s Nita, that number is increasing every day,” says Victoria Galobart, head of marketing at Seaqual.

Digital knitting

JDD’s collaboration with textile leader Camira brings further innovation to the NITA range. Upholstered using the Camira Knit 3D digital knitting process, each pod is manufactured with zero waste and pinpoint precision. This technology eliminates traditional offcuts and excess materials, delivering a seamless, tailored finish with exceptional comfort.

By leveraging computer-controlled knitting, JDD ensures lean manufacturing with reduced environmental impact – perfectly aligning with its mission to build high-performance, eco-conscious pieces.

“Collaborating with JDD on the creation of NITA has been a truly rewarding experience,” says Darren Hill, head of Camira Knit development and operations. “Technical knitting is perfectly suited to the pod’s construction. Its precision and efficiency allow for beautifully tailored textile components made with just two essential inputs – yarn and electricity. Using state-of-the-art knitting machines, we’ve created a fully bespoke, zero-waste solution that eliminates the need for cutting and sewing. The modern aesthetic of the knit is a direct reflection of the advanced, sustainable process behind it. What makes it even more powerful is the use of Seaqual yarn, demonstrating that beautiful design and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”

Built to last – by design

Taking inspiration from nature, the NITA shell nods to leaf and petal formations and at the same time, the varying gradient within the knit’s woven pattern carries a visual function and an aesthetic signature, adding privacy in a way that’s only possible with this manufacturing technique. Equally, the tension created by stretching the knit over a metal frame creates a different relationship between fabric and frame than with JDD’s other traditionally upholstered collections.

“NITA began as a response to two key challenges – the global issue of plastic pollution in our oceans and the lack of dedicated spaces in workplaces for employees to decompress and recharge,” explains head of product design at JDD Furniture, Henry Watson. “With this in mind, we saw Camira Knit as the perfect material, offering the freedom to explore bold, organic forms while staying true to JDD’s brand language.

The NITA Sustainable Seating Pod is now on display at JDD Furniture’s London showroom, open Monday to Friday. Visitors can book a guided tour with showroom manager Victor Castillo directly at [email protected] or contact their local JDD sales representative to schedule a private viewing.
