Report summary

It is just ten years since Textiles Intelligence first published the word "sustainability". At the time, the development of "eco" fabric collections was novel, and recycling was relatively new. Indeed, claims of sustainability were mostly used as a marketing tool, highlighting the lack of seriousness with which the concept was then viewed.

However, ten years on, the concept of sustainability has become much more sophisticated, and almost all companies have some form of sustainability strategy. Indeed, the concept of sustainability now extends along the entire supply chain, and almost every innovation—ranging from dyes and auxiliaries to new fibres, fabrics and garments—has one or more environmental components.

In this report, Robin Anson reflects on changes in the textile and clothing industry's attitude to environmental sustainability, with particular reference to "push" and "pull" effects along the supply chain, and changes in corporate culture.
