At the recent Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) in London (May 20-22), high-end UK upholstery maker SCP showcased its latest collection of of furniture designs that are 100% foam-free and fully based on natural and sustainable materials.

Petrochemical foams have been the industry standard since the 1950s but contain harmful chemicals which subsequently lead to the off-gassing of VOCs. In addition, in the UK, all petrochemical foams used in furniture production require an additional chemical fire retardant treatment which is not necessary with the company’s foam-free designs.

A combination of 100% natural and sustainable are now employed in all items which are handmade at the company’s factory in Norfolk, with an emphasis on the perfect balance of comfort and durability. Filling materials include burlap – a coarse and heavy plain-woven fabric made from jute or hemp – latex-sprayed coconut husks, recycled heavy wool felts, natural latex, multi-density wool and duck and goose feathers that are produced under strict specifications and certified cruelty free. These are combined with natural face fabrics and select FSC certified timbers.

Items from SCP’s latest collection were displayed to stunning effect within the 11th Century church, St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield, during CDW.
