How has the pandemic changed the way we live?

This was a question explored recently in online workshops held by the Heimtextil Trend Council in planning the dominant home textile design themes of the 2022/23 season, ahead of the next Heimtextil show which will now take place in Frankfurt from January 11-14, 2022.

The Trend Council comprises the three internationally renowned agencies – SPOTT Trends & Business (Denmark), Studio FranklinTill (UK) and Stijlinstituut Amsterdam (the Netherlands). Once again SPOTT is leading the project to bring a distinctly Scandinavian flavour to the show.

“Even after such a lean period, Heimtextil Trends will be at the heart of our fair and act as a central point for everyone looking for inspiration and wanting to update themselves on progressive design and the hottest furnishing themes of the coming season,” says Olaf Schmidt, vice president of textiles and textile technologies for show organiser Messe Frankfurt. “Over three decades, the trends have become the international flagship and USP of Heimtextil.”

Every year, the meeting of the Heimtextil Trend Council in Spring marks the beginning of the preparatory work on the following year’s trade fair. At the same time, the trend experts preview the direction expected to be taken by interior-furnishing design in the coming season.

Heimtextil remains true to its goal of identifying the defining design developments within the framework of the larger context of lifestyle trends, as well as the product world of Heimtextil exhibitors. A particular emphasis in this respect is given to sustainable aspects along the entire value chain, and in this context, the Future Materials Library, curated by London’s Studio FranklinTill, will be further developed and enriched for the 2022 exhibition.

One of the focal points of the coming season will be how the pandemic has changed our life and, therefore, the way we furnish our homes. Unsurprisingly, one emphasis will on the major theme of ‘New Work’.

Although the pandemic ensured there was no fair in 2020, Heimtextil can still offer the sector a plentiful source of ideas, designs and inspiration in the latest edition of the Heimtextil Trend Book, which provides insights into numerous design projects and acts as an orientation aid for the current trend season.

“We live in a time where nothing is new, and yet everything is new,” say its compilers. “We do new things in old ways and we use old technologies in new ways. We see trends that are new, yet familiar. With the latest colour, design and material trends for 21/22, we encourage you to rethink, redo and remake, to make your business fit for the future.”
