Lenzing took a special exhibition of brand collaborations – originally installed at the company’s headquarters in Austria – to July’s Kingpins denim show in New York, to mark the 30th anniversary of its Tencel fibre.

Exhibits ranged from designer Michael Glasser’s line of casual Tencel lyocell separates, launched in the early 1990s, to Ralph Lauren’s outfits for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea.

Other highlights included the Engineered Jean launched by Levi Strauss in 1999, which marked a progressive move away from 100% cotton denim, using Tencel lyocell in the weft and cotton in the warp, and the introduction of Tencel in blends with other materials like organic cotton and recycled polyester and ocean plastic by G-Star Raw in 2014.

For its in-house magazine, Carved in Blue, Tricia Carey, Lenzing’s director of global business development for denim, has also recently been catching up with mills in Pakistan to hear how they are using Tencel and Refibra in their collections. Lenzing partners in Pakistan include AGI Denim, Artistic Denim Mills, Artistic Fabric Mills, Azgard9, Crescent Bahuman, Naveena Denim Mills, SM Denim, and US Denim. Full details of the latest collections from these companies are available here.

Tencel lyocell is made from wood using a closed-loop process that captures and reuses 99% of the solvents and water it employs, while Refibra technology enables circularity by replacing a portion of inputs with chemically recycled cotton waste.
