Global demand for technical textiles increased in value terms by an average of 5.2% per annum between 2022 and 2025, and is forecast to rise by an average of 5.3% per annum between 2025 and 2027. The latest report from Textiles Intelligence highlights a range of factors expected to underpin this growth over the 2022-2027 period, including rising birth rates, expanding and ageing populations, and continued urbanisation.

In addition, advances in manufacturing technologies and ongoing product innovation are expected to broaden adoption, while heightened awareness of technical textiles’ benefits is supporting uptake across an expanding number of end use applications. Regulatory drivers are also strengthening demand, with increasingly stringent requirements accelerating the use of higher performance materials.

Sustainability trends are set to play a key role, notably the shift towards environmentally sustainable and biodegradable products, alongside a broader preference for lighter weight materials.

Regionally, the Asia-Pacific market is forecast to deliver the fastest growth in demand between 2022 and 2027. As a result, it is expected to remain the world’s largest regional market in 2027, accounting for 37.4% of global demand.

In terms of materials, synthetic fibres remain by far the most important type used in technical textiles. However, the report indicates that natural fibres are forecast to record the fastest growth rate between 2022 and 2027.

Woven fabrics currently dominate demand by fabric type, although nonwoven fabrics are forecast to grow at the fastest rate over the period. By application area, the strongest growth is forecast to occur in technical textiles for environmental protection. Nevertheless, the largest application area in 2027 is expected to remain transportation construction, equipment and furnishing.
