Report summary

Technical textiles manufacturers are facing unprecedented pressures in 2022. Most of these became evident during 2020 and 2021—due largely, but not entirely, to the COVID-19 pandemic—and since then they have been exacerbated.

Among the pressures are the introduction of the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and crippling supply chain issues. In addition, there have been sharp rises in the costs of logistics and transportation—whether by ship, road or air.

Aligned with these have been continuing rises in the costs of energy and prices of raw materials for making synthetic fibres derived from oil. In response, several industry leaders have been obliged to implement cost control measures while others have acted to pass on their own price increases and introduced across-the-board prices hikes.

In this report, Robin Anson examines the lasting implications of the pressures facing the technical textiles industry and the responses of four of the industry’s leaders, namely Autoliv, BASF, Indorama Mobility Group, and IVL Hygiene Group.
