Portal has unveiled the Biome Insulated Jacket – a performance-led outerwear piece engineered with Italian insulation specialist Thermore, marking a new push towards high-spec, responsibly designed synthetic fill in the premium outdoor market.
The jacket is built around Thermore’s EcoDown, the company’s flagship recycled synthetic insulation. Made entirely from post-consumer PET bottles, EcoDown is designed to replicate the loft, softness and packability of natural down while outperforming it in wet conditions.
Unlike traditional down, which can collapse when damp, EcoDown retains thermal performance thanks to its hydrophobic fibres – a feature increasingly appreciated by retailers as consumers look for reliable warmth without animal-derived materials.
Launched intwo colours – Desert Taupe and Black Beauty – the Biome Jacket mirrors Portal’s clean aesthetic, offering a slightly cropped silhouette, streamlined panelling and practical detailing geared towards both everyday wear and cold-weather hiking.
The jacket is filled with 150gsm EcoDown, calibrated to provide static warmth in low temperatures while preventing overheating during light activity.
Other details include breathable underarm panels, multiple zip pockets, a two-way front zip, an adjustable hood and a packable design that stows into its internal dump pocket. A size medium weighs 560g.
Based in Milan, Italy, Thermore specialises in the research, development, production and marketing of high quality thermal insulation for apparel. It was the first company to launch sustainable insulation in the 1980s and is now highly concentrated on eco-friendly innovation, mostly using polyester fibres recycled from PET bottles.
