Bühler, a leading specialist in cotton yarn manufacturing, has presented its BeDry 100% cotton yarn at this year’s Techtextil trade fair for technical textiles and nonwovens that concluded in Frankfurt last month.

According to the company, a frequent topic of conversation at the exhibition was the tendency towards more comfortable occupational and protective clothing. The demands made on such garments have shifted sharply in recent times, as modern, durable and functional garments are increasingly chosen for leisure activities, rather than exclusively for work.

The 100% cotton functional yarn BeDry developed by Bühler has been specifically designed to provide comfortable wearability combined with moisture management, providing an opportunity for designers to explore long lasting and extremely comfortable workwear.

Functional BeDry yarns

“Customers who want both the comfort of cotton and the moisture-transfer qualities of synthetics will find what they’re looking for in our BeDry technology,” says the company. “Until now, cotton hasn’t been thought of as a performance fibre. But new advances in technology turn this traditional material into fabric appropriate for sports and active-wear. By using BeDry on the inner layer of a fabric, moisture is removed from the skin to the hydrophilic outer layer, which spreads moisture over the fabric surface so it can evaporate quicker.”

BeDry is distinguished by its superior, speedy moisture management that keeps the wearer dry both during and after exercise, the company reports. With properties similar to the synthetics, hydrophobic BeDry is said to wick away the moisture, dry quickly, and reduce the unpleasant sensation of wet fabric sticking to the body.

BeDry yarn is ideal for knitted or woven sports- and active-wear, underwear and lingerie, socks, work-wear, high-end T-shirts, and golf and tennis shirts. The product’s properties can stand up to many washings, and are safe for both the user and the environment, according to the manufacturer.
