Pablo Larrázabal, a young European Tour professional golfer from Spain, chose the 2012 ThermoCool range of knitted shirts from well known Scottish golf wear brand Lyle & Scott for last week’s Open Championship which was held at Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s from 19-22 July.

According to Advansa, ThermoCool’s manufacturer, Pablo chose the range not only for its fashionable looks but also for its outstanding ‘duo regulation’ functional properties which assist in maximising comfort and performance on the course.

High Activity - Evaporative Cooling

During periods of high activity ThermoCool is said to evaporate moisture faster than other materials thanks to its unique fibre mix. The fibres are designed to provide added evaporative surface and a multi-channel surface gives improved moisture transportation. Hollow fibres are said to allow enhanced air circulation and focus energy on the evaporation process.

Low Activity – Thermo-buffering

“When external conditions are cold and at low activity levels, moisture needs to be moved rapidly away to avoid muscle chill or bodily discomfort,” Advansa says. “Hollow voids in the fabric provide a lightweight material with thermo-buffering properties: it protects the wearer from temperature changes. This also prevents post chill and still allows excess heat to dissipate into the air.”

The Open Championship, or ‘The Open’ as it is referred to locally, is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf and was first played in 1860. Last week’s event saw top golfers showing their skill at the highest levels competing for the coveted Golf Champion Trophy, commonly known as The Claret Jug, which has been in existence since 1873. This year’s winner was South African Ernie Els.

At different stages of the tournament where concentration, high performance and endurance were essential in the wide variety of weather conditions thrown up by England´s North West, Pablo Larrázabal wore the fashionable hi-tech Lyle & Scott clothing featuring ThermoCool in order to make play more comfortable.
