Applied DNA Sciences, Inc., a provider of DNA-based security solutions completed the successful application of SigNature DNA at every stage of the woolen textile manufacturing process in Yorkshire, UK. This first phase of the "DNA in Textiles" project was fully funded by Yorkshire Forward in collaboration with the Textile Centre of Excellence, and its consortium of companies. Applied DNA is embarking on the next phase of its wool protection program, a multimillion dollar commercialization program, which will likely include second-phase funding from Yorkshire Forward.

"We see the importance and relevance of using DNA to safeguard our brands and our industry here in Yorkshire," commented Bill Macbeth, Managing Director, Textile Centre of Excellence. "We need to protect the quality and reputation of the textiles and apparel we make. It's simple really, we manufacture the best woollen cloth in the world and DNA can be effective in helping us to combat the rising tide of counterfeit goods."

The work was done in close collaboration with local Yorkshire manufacturers, weavers, finishers and tailors. Applied DNA demonstrated the ease of application of SigNature DNA to wool at each stage. Most importantly, the company proved the ability of SigNature DNA to withstand different textile manufacturing processes, including dyeing, scouring, washing and dry cleaning. SigNature DNA was authenticated unequivocally at every stage of manufacture.

Wool is a freely traded international commodity often crossing multiple borders during the manufacturing process. Prior to SigNature DNA, there was no reliable way to track wool during this process. Global production of wool is now more than 3.1 billion pounds annually (Purdue University). The total yearly retail sales value of wool products is around $80 billion (Woolmark).
