Report summary

The latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European fabric fairs for the autumn/winter 2017/18 season.

The author of the report visited Munich Fabric Start, Première Vision Fabrics and Milano Unica where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular.

Overall, exhibitors reported that they did good business at the fairs as international buyers have increasingly been sourcing the innovative, high quality textiles that European manufacturers are producing. Indeed, it was evident from the collections on show that considerable creative skills had been employed to produce fabrics with added value and excitement. Several of the fabrics on show were extravagant, and included huge outsize designs in jacquards, prints and weaves. But many were understated.

A number of fabrics had sensory or functional characteristics. Texture was important, and soft brushed surfaces were highly sought after. Also prominent were velvets, and fabrics which had been felted or cut and fringed. Other key trends for the season included painterly floral prints, designs with a graphic aesthetic and the use of luxury fibres.

There was also much focus on environmental sustainability as an increasing number of companies are utilising processes which consume less energy or water.
