In a bid to give plastic bottles and other single-use plastics a new lease of life, Texfelt, a British manufacturer, has launched an environmentally friendly luxury carpet underlay, which could see flooring retailers help customers re-use 180 plastic bottles per roll of underlay they buy.

Assuming five rolls are used by the average household, that’s 900 bottles per house, the company says it is helping to provide a cleaner living environment for everyone, tackling the popular subject of household air pollution. With 85% of the underlay made from recycled PET plastics bottles and other single use plastics, Texfelt’s Springbond underlay is trying to combat the eight million tonnes of plastic that fill our oceans every year.

As well as being green, clean and durable, Springbond comes in three different varieties – 7mm double stick and 9mm stretch fit for heavy contract use and 11mm for luxury domestic use, offering superb under-foot comfort. The thickness of the underlay means it is not just comfortable but insulating both in terms of heat and noise acoustics.  It also offers sound-proofing properties, minimising the transfer of noise between floors.

Unlike most carpet underlays, it is fully recyclable at the end of its useable life and, because it contains no PU foam, there are no harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) meaning better air quality throughout the home.

“With the world currently producing more than 300 million tonnes of plastic each year, and half of that being used just once, sometimes for a few seconds, before it’s thrown away, people are looking for green alternatives to everyday items,” said James Taylor, Managing Director at Texfelt.

“The world needs to reduce its consumption of plastic and, while this is happening, we need to find ways of upcycling the waste product that’s building up. Springbond is an ethical eco-friendly option that poses a huge opportunity for retailers who want to do something to make a difference, while enabling us to demonstrate our commitment to the green agenda.”

Springbond is designed and manufactured in Yorkshire and it is a partner of non-profit organisation Plastic Oceans, which addresses plastic pollution.
