Report summary

This report includes statistical data and analysis of glass fibre reinforced plastics production in Europe and provides breakdowns in terms of segment and country or region. It also provides an outlook for the future. European production of glass fibre reinforced plastics is estimated to have declined in 2020.

The decline was the steepest since 2009, and it has been attributed primarily to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Geographically, the largest producer was Germany, followed by Eastern Europe, Spain and Portugal, Italy, the UK and Ireland, and France. The largest segment was that of sheet moulding compound (SMC) components and bulk moulding compound (BMC) components, followed by: products manufactured using open mould processes; sheet components and pultruded components manufactured using continuous processes; glass mat reinforced thermoplastics (GMT) and long fibre reinforced thermoplastics (LFT); products manufactured using resin transfer moulding (RTM); and pipes and tanks.

The European glass fibre reinforced plastics industry is expected to recover from the setback in 2020 and grow over the long term as new opportunities arise in existing markets and new markets, and as research into further applications bears fruit. However, some sectors will recover faster than others. The construction industry, for instance, is likely to fully recover in 2021 whereas the aviation industry is unlikely to recover before 2024.
