WhiteFrost Flowtec Jacket review: Ultimate outdoor solution?

There's plenty to moan about as winter grinds on, however, it is also the time for outdoor and sports enthusiasts to pack their snowboard and skiing equipment and head for the snow slopes. Since here, in the UK, we are not spoiled for snow, we decided to take it to the snowy and chilly Lithuania to test the new Salomon’s WhiteFrost Flowtec men’s jacket, featured in the company’s Fall/Winter 2016/2017 collection.

An ISPO Award 2016-2017 winner in the Outer Layer 2 L category, the high-performance jacket for men is packed with fabric technology, aiming at providing ultimate comfort and exceptional temperature regulation.

Salomon’s WhiteFrost Flowtec men’s jacket was featured in the company’s Fall/Winter 2016/2017 collection.

With the patented Flowtech technology, the jacket has its own ventilation system that is designed to allow air to circulate inside, through walls, removing moisture to maintain a constant body temperature during exercise and recovery. Air circulates via channels layered between shell and insulation, which balances air body heat and cold outside air.

That is in addition to the use of Primaloft Silver synthetic insulation, which aims to offer warmth without bulk, high breathability, as well as water resistance, lightness and softness.

Appearance

The high performance regular fit WhiteFrost Flowtec jacket for men is available in two colours – black and blue. It features a zip off hood with 3D adjustment, as well as adjustable wrists made with AdvancedSkin ActiveDry – the company’s innovative stretch-jersey optimised for moisture management.

The high performance regular fit WhiteFrost Flowtec jacket for men features two zipped chest pockets.

The jacket also has two zipped chest pockets, two zipped hand pockets, a pass pocket on left arm, a zipped chest inside pocket and a goggle mesh inside pocket, as well as a completely closed breathable mesh lining.

Pertex fabrics

For this winter season’s collection, French company Salomon has become one of many, including adidas, Berghaus, Bergans, Montane and Rab, which featured latest fabric technologies from Pertex, a leading technical fabric brand known for its lightweight and highly-durable performance fabrics.

The jacket is an ISPO Award 2016-2017 winner in the Outer Layer 2 L category.

The jacket features Pertex Microlight and Pertex Shield+ fabrics. Pertex Microlight downproof and windproof, as well as water-repellent and durable fabric is made from tightly woven yarns to prevent excessive heat loss through the fabric. Pertex Shield+ is the brand’s lightest 3-ply waterproof breathable fabric for fast moving outdoor activities. It uses a hydrophilic PU membrane to provide a high level of dynamic breathability.

Functionality

Despite the whole range of technology and the Flowtech 3D air intake and layering system, which creates extra space between the two layers of the garment, the jacket appeared very lightweight and extremely comfortable. Featuring the company’s Motionfit technology, aimed at facilitating an underserviced movement of the body, the jacket proved extremely flexible during the snowboarding activity. While it’s not stretchy, it allowed for free shoulder, arm, head and neck mobility, without the need to readjust following the descent.

The jacket also dealt with the problem of overheating during the exercise. Just as promised, the remarkably breathable fabric helped maintain the normal body temperature, without creating freezing or uncomfortable sensations during the recovery.

With the patented Flowtech technology, the jacket has its own ventilation system.

Despite the high breathability and lightweight, the jacket also demonstrated its high protection properties. It was good enough to withstand the temperatures as low as -12°C in Lithuania, and was just as good against the heavy winds and occasional rain that recently descended on the North West of England.

A good option for those who are not willing to compromise between comfort and functionality.
