Teijin Aramid has launched a new higher performing lightweight aramid yarn, Twaron 550f1000. The new yarn is said to be the finest filament based on aramid fibre in the world and will provide better ballistic protection in body armour for police, soldiers and law enforcement officers.

Twaron 550f1000 is also said to have the highest tenacity in combination with breaking strength in Teijin Aramid's portfolio, one of the broadest para aramid portfolios in the world.

“Twaron 550f1000 consists of 1000 filaments which means that it has significantly higher performance than other yarns,” Teijin Aramid said in a statement.

The new yarn will be mainly used in soft anti-ballistic products for the police, law enforcement and military markets where the current trends are towards lightweight and comfortable bulletproof vests that comply with strict safety regulations.

Teijin Aramid says that in a woven fabric the yarn could be used for anti-ballistic and anti-stab products. It is said to have excellent fragment resistance and improves the resistance in exposure to the blast effects of roadside bombs and provides better bullet protection.

Teijin Aramid says it invested millions of Euros and resources to come up with such a high performing lightweight anti-ballistic product. "This new yarn is our response to the demand for lightweight ballistic protection, which itself is the result of the increasing threat of violence in society. Police officers, soldiers and even private citizens who require protection will start wearing a bulletproof vest earlier when the weight and comfort is even better than nowadays," Karl Henke, Business Manager Ballistic at Teijin Aramid said.

Twaron 550f1000 will be on show at the upcoming Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) and Conference, the largest trade show for professionals involved with the shooting sports, hunting and law enforcement industries.

Teijin Aramid is a subsidiary of the Teijin Group and world leader in aramids. Its products Twaron, Sulfron, Teijinconex and Technora are known for their strength, sustainability, safety, heat resistance and low weight. The four high performance fibres are produced in the Netherlands and Japan.
